THE FINALS

Venues

U18 and Mixed Fours at Caroline Chisholm - Northants

Others at Church Gresley - Birmingham

SUMMARY - Our total entry this year was 190 - an all time record. This resulted in us being allocated 3 places in Singles/Pairs/Triples/M Fours and 4 places in Fours/U18s.  This gave us 20 individual teams in total. However, in the initial round robin stages of the Finals, only 7 of these teams made it through to the KO stages. The highlights were Ben and Sean's progression to the Singles Semis and Jamie also reaching the U18 Singles Semi.

Our best achievements in each discipline were.....

Singles - Sean Conroy & Ben Render - last 4

U18s -  Jamie Smith - last 4

Pairs -  Sean Conroy & Jo Newsome - last 32

Triples - All three teams had a single win in the round robin

Fours -  2 of our 4 teams had a single win in the round robin

M Fours - Ben Render Jayne Rudd Gareth & Jacinta Townend - last 8

Brief reports on each discipline are shown below.

MIXED FOURS Saturday 22nd March (8 ends)

Ben Render  Jayne Rudd  Gareth & Jacinta Townend

Gordon & Linda Raggett David & Anne Herbert

Jim & Jean Weatherill Lesley & Robert Harris

In the round robin, Gordon started with a 15-4 win but then lost the next 2 games 5-6 and 3-8 so unfortunately did not progress any further. Jim's team pulled back from 0-7 down in their first game to win 8-7, won their next 7-4 and drew their last 8-8 to reach the last 16. However they then went out 5-9 to Hampshire who went on to reach the S Finals against the eventual winners from Somerset.

Hopes therefore rested with last years Champions Ben and Co.  2 wins 16-3, 14-6 and and a 7-9 loss saw them also make it into the knockouts. Here they beat Humberside by 10-5 but in the Q Finals, after a great fight against the Somerset rink of Keith & Carole Hawkins, Catherine Cowlin and Chris Shakeshaft (the eventual winners) they lost 5-6 in an extra end.

U18 SINGLES Sunday 23rd March

Danny Langdon    Jamie Smith    Cameron Breeze    Megan Holtby

Megan started well winning all 3 round robin games, 12-8, 16-6 and 10-9 so reaching the last 16 for the second year. However she was unable to improve on this going out after losing 8-12 to Hampshire.

Cameron unfortunately failed to score, losing his 3 games 8-13, 4-18 and 8-13. In the plate, he just won his first game by 12-11 but them lost out 5-15 to Hereford.

Danny, last years runner-up, reached the last 16 with two wins 15-3 and 27-0 (!) and a 9-9 draw. Here he just pipped Dorset 10-9 before losing to West Sussex by 8-12 in the Q Finals.

Finally, Jamie in his first year for North Yorkshire, kept the flag flying, reaching the last 16 with 11-4 and 10-9 wins and an 8-11 loss. A 12-9 defeat of Norfolk and then 8-6 against Hampshire took him to the S Finals where after an early 5-0 lead, he finally lost to West Sussex by 9-11. Good effort Jamie.

SINGLES Thursday 3rd April

Ben Render     Sean Conroy    Gordon Raggett

All 3 went through the round robin and into the last 32.

Gordon with two wins (9-6 and 10-5) and a 5-9 loss;

Ben with 3 wins - (17-7, 7-6 and 12-6)

Sean with 2 wins (19-7, 12-6) and a 10-11 loss.

A great start which continued into the next round with and 11-10 win for Gordon, 11-5 for Sean and a decisive 17-2 win for Ben (with an end to spare).

So all three were in the last 16 - a first for North Yorkshire. Here Gordon went out to Roger Wiggins (the eventual Champion) by 3-12 whilst both Ben and Sean had narrow wins (10-9 and 11-10 respectively) to reach the Quarter Finals.

Further victories saw Ben into the Semi Finals by 12-7 over Richard Nichol (Surrey) and Sean over Peter Hore (Cornwall) by 11-4.

An intriguing prospect.....could it be an all North Yorkshire Final? But no, Sean went down 5-10 to Ben Pay (Hampshire) whilst Ben lost 8-12  to Roger Wiggins (Oxfordshire). Both were disappointed naturally, but hey, 2 semi finalists is a pretty good achievement - well done you two! Tomorrow is a fresh start......come on!!

PAIRS Friday 4th April

Rose Haynes/Richard Lochman     Sean Conroy/Joseph Newsome    Ben Render/David Newsome

After Ben and Sean's great run in the Singles yesterday expectations were high for another good day. But it was not to be.

Ben and David were in a tough group containing among others Jody Bright - a former Pairs Champion on 3 former occasions. However, they forced Jody and partner Ben Pay to a 7-7 draw before losing 6-9 to Craig Strong and Jon Pitcher (the eventual runners-up). When they lost their final game to Warwick1 by a single shot (10-11) their day was over.

Rose and Richard meanwhile won their first game against Dennis Leather (a former Triples and Fours Champion) and Steve Burrows, by a single shot 8-7. Next came a tough draw against Craig Burgess (Singles Champion in 2012) and Mitchell Young which they lost 4-11 before finally going down and out in their last game 6-10 to Bucks3.

Finally, good news. Last years finalists Sean and Joseph won all three round robins games, 12-3, 7-4 and 9-5 (against Barry Hedges - 2008 Singles Champion). But they too then bowed out in the last 32 by a single shot to East Sussex2, 8-9.

Hopes now turn to the remaining 2 days and our Triples and Fours....watch this space.

FOURS Saturday 5th April

Rose Haynes  Richard Lochman  Roger Green  Megan Holtby

David Newsome  Danny Langdon  Jake Potter  James Clark

Anne & Mick Ridge  Andrew & Mary Leng

A very disappointing set of results with none of our teams progessing to the knockout stages.

Anne's team: 2 losses and 1 win. 4-11 to Gloucester; 7-8 to Essex1; 7-6 to E Sussex1.

TRIPLES Sunday 6th April

Rose  Haynes  Roger Green  David Newsome

Gareth, Jacinta and Edward Townend and Megan Holtby (sub)

Gordon Raggett  Danny Langdon  David Herbert

After the disappointments of the last 2 days, were the Triples going to give us something to shout about? The answer unfortunately was "no" with all 3 teams failing to make any progress into the last 32.

Rose's team: 2 losses and 1 win. 5-7 to Cheshire1; 11-7 to Bucks1; 6-10 to Cornwall2 (eventual runners-up).

Jacinta's team6-12 to Gloucester3; 7-12 to Norfolk2; 10-4 to Hampshire3.

Gordon's team: 9-12 to Somerset2; 9-8 over Cornwall1: 5-16 to Essex4.

SO ONCE AGAIN WE DID NOT ACHIEVE AS MUCH AS WE HAD HOPED AS A COUNTY AND MUST LOOK TO 2015 TO GETTING SOME REAL RESULTS.

IT WILL HAPPEN ONE DAY AND WE WILL KEEP TRYING UNTIL IT DOES.

IT WAS GREAT  TO SEE OUR NEIGHBOURS IN WEST YORKSHIRE DOING SO WELL IN THEIR FIRST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO STEVE PACKER, ANDY JONES, DARREN COOKSON and KEVIN SIDDLE ON REACHING THE FOURS FINAL, BEATING SEVERAL TEAMS CONTAI NING FORMER CHAMPIONS ON THE WAY.
