THE FINALS

SUMMARY - Our total entry this year was the largest ever and resulted in two Finals places in the Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours with three in the Mixed Fours and four in the U18 Singles - 15 teams and 36 players in total.

Of these, 9 teams failed to progress beyond the initial round robin stage - as usual a difficult hurdle to jump and somewhat dependent on a kind draw.  Of the other 6, David/Joseph/Jill Newsome/Marlene Jackson, and Ben Render/Bronagh Malone/Jayne Rudd/Richard Lochman reached the first round of the knockouts in the Mixed Fours whilst David/Joseph/Jill Newsome and Rose Haynes/Gareth Townend/Roger Green did the same in the Triples.

The best achievements came from Nathan Kotek reached the last 16 in the Singles whilst David/Joseph/Newsome/Ben Render/Richard Lochman went one better to reach the Quarter Finals in the Fours.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MIXED FOURS Saturday 27th March 2010 (8 ends)

Geoff & Anne Whitehead,/Geoff Dye/Lynda Tranmer

David, Jo & Jill Newsome/Marlene Jackson

Ben Render/Bronagh Malone/Jayne Rudd/Richard Lochman

With 3 places and 3 strong teams this year hopes were high.  However Geoff and Co. failed to get through the round robin after losing 2 of their 3 games whilst  Ben and David's teams did progress after 2 wins and 1 loss each, only to be knocked out straight away. Ben went out to the eventual winners from Shropshire (their 3rd win in a row) whilst David lost to Norfolk (last years runners up) who went on to reach this years semi-final.

U18 SINGLES Sunday 28th March 2010 (11 ends)

Nathan Kotek, Charlotte Clark, Matthew Jackson and Edward Townend.

This was the first time we had ever been allocated 4 places and for 3 of our players it was their first experience of playing in the National finals. Nathan was making his second visit and having had a good season 'at home' (Singles, Fours and Junior Champion) must have felt very hopeful. However, it was not to be for any of our team and apart from 2 draws and a solitary win by Matthew, all the round robin games were lost.

Charlotte Clark - 8-13  4-9 and 0-30 (to Matt Sifford the eventual winner)

Nathan Kotek - 4-18  10-11 and 7-7

Edward Townend - 8-8  3-13  3-9

Matthew Jackson - 2-16  9-14  13-4

SINGLES Thursday 8th April 2010 - (11 ends)

Nathan Kotek and David Newsome.

David started well, forcing former Triples Champion Jim Wood to a 9-9 draw but them lost 3-11 to Gareth Stanway, the 2002 Singles Champion and also last  years Pairs Champion. Unfortunately a final 11-8 win over Wiltshire No1 Geoff Lane, was not enough to get him into the last 32.

Nathan, representing us in the Singles for the first time, started with a convincing 14-4 win over East Sussex and a 9-7 win over Marc Lancaster (West Sussex) - a Triples Champion in 2004. Although his last game resulted in a 6-11 defeat at the hands of Norfolk, he had done enough to reach the final 32. He then had a great win over Staffordshire's experienced Darren Beardmore who had previously won the Pairs (1997), Triples (1997) and Fours (1992). The 12-5 result against Darren was a real achievement and took Nathan into the final 16. Here he met Steve Bailey, the West Midlands No1 and although he went into a substantial lead, the second half of the match saw Steve come back and end Nathan's run by a single shot 13-14.

PAIRS Friday 9th April 2010 - (10 ends)

Francis Boatman/Nathan Kotek and Ben Render/Richard Lochman.

Francis/Nathan just lost their first game (9-10), won their second (9-4) - a good result against Chris Willies and Mick Tandy (the 2004 Fours Champion), but lost their last (4-10) and so failed to progress. Ben/Richard lost their first two games (6-9 and 5-8) to tough opposition (including last years Pairs Champion Nick Tideswell from Staffs) but salvaged some pride in their last game with a very convincing 15-1 win over Suffolk so likewise did not do enough to reach the knockout stage.

FOURS Saturday 10th April 2010 - (8 ends

Gordon Raggett/Francis & Nigel Boatman/Jacinta Townend and David & Joseph Newsome/Ben Render/Richard Lochman.

Although Gordon & Co had a good 11-2 win in their final game against Surrey, their two previous defeats at the hands of Buckingham (5-6) and West Midlands (1-14) meant they did not make the cut.

David's Four however clocked up three good wins (7-4, 16-5 and 14-4) in their round robin games and went into the knockouts full of hope and expectation. Things continued to go well with a 9-5 win over Surrey1 followed by a 13-3 defeat of Surrey2 (with an end to spare) to take them into the Quarter Finals. Here they came up against the West Midlands team skipped by the experienced Malcolm Follis (a Singles and Triples Champion way back in 1987 and 1988 but also Triples Champion last year). Their team also contained Malcolm's son Scott (last year's Triples Champion) and Matt Smith (the Pairs Champion from 2008). Against such a formidable team, David's eventual defeat by 3-7 should not be considered as such a bad result and in any case his Four can be pleased to have been part of the highlight for our county at this years Nationals.

TRIPLES Sunday 11th April 2010 - (9 ends)

David/Joseph/Jill Newsome and Rose Haynes/Gareth Townend/Roger Green

Both our teams were undefeated in the round robin with two wins and a draw each but both immediately went out in their first KO match - David by 4-11 and Rose by 2-12 (ironically to the same Cornwall trio she had defeated last year!) and both with an end still to play. A disappointing end to a good start.
