THE 2017 FINALS

SUMMARY - In each discipline the normal format of 32 finalists playing in groups of 4 was followed, thus ensuring everyone had at least 3 games. Group winners and runners up then played in a preliminary KO round leading to Quarter and Semi Finals before the last two eventually contested the Final.

Our own team of qualifiers comprised 5 Singles, Pairs and Triples and 6 Fours - 54 players in total, all of whom had qualified via our County Championships held earlier in the season.  (See Roll of Honour for names of all our qualifiers). Of the 63 games played by our teams in the initial round robin stages, we had 39 wins, 20 losses and 4 draws -  leading to 13 of our 21 teams making it through to the knockout stages (final 16).  (Brief details of each discipline appear below).

Singles    - D Langdon (N Yorkshire) beat Adam Smith (Stockport) 10-7

Pairs        -  M Clancy & B Holbrook (Stockport)  beat B & L Toleman (N Yorkshire) 9-6

Triples     - B Burn, M Clancy & B Holbrook (Stockport) beat D Herbert, D Edwards and P Williamson (N Yorkshire) xx-xx

Fours       - P Clubley, D Smith, C Rookes & G Stubbs (Humberside) beat B Burn, M & L Clancy & B Holbrook (Stockport) 9-0

Shield      - All those reaching the quarter-finals and above are awarded points (15 per discipline) which go towards the County Shield (but only the first 4 teams entered in each discipline count so total points do not always add up to 60).

This year the best overall county was STOCKPORT with 16 points

2nd   -    N YORKSHIRE 13

3rd    -    W YORKSHIRE 9

6th   -     DURHAM 1

7th   -     DERBYSHIRE 0

Note that as usual a raffle was held on each day for prizes supplied by the participating counties. These were both run by Stockport and the total amount raised (for NESMBA funds) was just over 500 - thanks everyone.

After a brief introduction from Andy Miles and Graham Fish, bowling commenced at 9.25 with the FOURS in which only 3 of our 6 teams made it through to the preliminary KO round. Here, Rose Haynes' four went out 2-6, but Neil Flynn, Francis Boatman, Jane Rudd and Steve Duffin reached the quarter finals only to be narrowly defeated (4-5) by the eventual champions from Humberside. Bronagh & Lee Toleman, Ben Render and Danny Langdon also reached the last 8 but then went down 5-11 to W Yorkshire.

In the afternoon it was the turn of the SINGLES in which 4 of our 5 contestants managed to progress to the last 16. Here, James Clark and Bronagh Toleman were both defeated by 4-9 and 1-9 respectively. Geoff Whitehead went one step further but then lost his quarter-final 4-12. However,  Danny Langdon after winning his preliminary match 12-7 then defeated Stephen Proctor by 11-8 and Kevin Siddle (who had just knocked out Geoff) 9-6 to reach the Final against Adam Smith of Stockport. This was another closely contested game and Danny, still only 20 was up against 27 year old Adam who was recently the runner-up in the ESMBA Open Singles (won by Danny's semi-final "victim" Kevin). Anyway, reputations were not going to deter Danny who finally claimed victory by 10-7 to become the 5th North Yorkshire player to claim the singles crown. WELL DONE DANNY!

Sunday morning saw our five PAIRS take to the mats to see what they could achieve. This looked promising with 3 of them reaching the last 16. However  David and Joseph Newsome were narrowly defeated by Stockport's Clancy and Holbrook (yesterdays fours finalists) who scored a 3 on the last end to win 8-7. Rose and Megan having won their preliminary 8-6, then went out to the same pair by 6-12 in their quarter-final. Bronagh and Lee Toleman meanwhile had a great run winning their knockouts by 15-4, 10-8 and 14-3 to give themselves a chance in the Final against this troublesome Stockport duo. However it was Stockport's day and they finally put paid to their third North Yorkshire team to take the Pairs title by 9-6.

At this point, presentations were made to the winners of the Inter-County league. These were Humberside A (2nd Division) and Staffordshire (1st Division).

Finally, on Sunday afternoon, it was the turn of our 5 TRIPLES and with 4 of them going through into the knockouts it was a promising start. Although Geoff & Ann Whitehead & Linda Tranmer fell at the first hurdle by 5-9, the other 3 all reached the quarter-finals where the inevitable happened with Francis Boatman, Steve Duffin and Danny Langdon drawn to play James Clark, Jake Potter and Peter Hawkett - the latter going through to the semis by 10-3. Our remaining triple, Dave Herbert, Dave Edwards and Paul Williamson also reached the  semis after 7-4 and 8-7 wins. Once again it was unfortunate that our two semi-finalists had to play each other but it was eventually Dave's trio who overcame James' in a tight game that ended 6-1.  This was a good achievement for these three who had only stepped in to take up an extra place but they now had to compete against Stockport's in form Burn/Clancy and Holbrook who had already featured in the Pairs and Fours finals. This proved to be a "bridge too far" for Dave & Co. with the Stockport three claiming an 11-4 victory.
