SUMMARY - This year the Championships were organised by the new NESMBA Championship Secretary, Andy Miles (West Yorkshire) aided and by his wife Barbara. Andy made full use of the software (spreadsheets) developed by his predecessor Barry Purcell of Lancashire although a problem with his printer meant the scorecards for the knockout rounds had to be prepared manually.  9 ESMBA umpires had been engaged and a rota was organised by Graham Foote to cover the whole weekend. Arthur Jackson (North Yorkshire) had again taken on the big task of driving a hire van down to Daventry to collect the 16 ESMBA mats and he was helped by North Yorkshire colleague Dennis Jarvis. (The mats were returned after the event to Manchester in time for the World Championships). At Barnard Castle on Friday evening many players had as usual turned up at the Teesdale Centre to unload and lay the mats and prepare the hall for the weekend. As usual two raffles were held with ticket sales organised by Bill Burn and the Stockport players and with prizes supplied by all the participating counties. A record amount of well over 500 was raised. Both days commenced after a few words of welcome and thanks from this years Chairman, Graham Foote.

In each discipline the normal format of 32 finalists playing in groups of 4 was followed, thus ensuring everyone had at least 3 games. Group winners and runners up then played in a preliminary KO round leading to Quarter and Semi Finals before the last two eventually contested the Final. Our own team of qualifiers comprised 5 Singles, Pairs and Fours and 4 Triples - 47 players in total, all of whom had qualified via our County Championships held earlier in the season.  (See Roll of Honour for names of all our qualifiers). Of the 57 games played by our teams in the initial round robin stages, we had 25 wins, 31 losses and 1 draw - a disappointing overall result leading to only 7 of our 19 teams to make it through to the knockout stages (final 16).  (Brief details of each discipline appear below).

Singles    - Bill Burn (Stockport) beat Nick Tideswell (Staffordshire) 13-4

Pairs        - Joseph and David Newsome (North Yorkshire) beat Steve and John Packer (West Yorkshire) 8-7

Triples     - Walter & Margaret Stockhill and Tony Farrar,  (West Yorkshire) beat J Pearson, D Walters and S Caley  (West Yorkshire) 7-6

Fours       - Darren & Hazel Cookson, Royston Lewis and Kevin Siddle (West Yorkshire) beat P Sutton, R Walsh, J Barlow and H Barlow (Staffordshire) 8-3

Shield     - All those reaching the Quarter Finals and above are awarded points (15 per discipline) which go towards the County Shield but only the first 4 teams entered in each discipline count so total points do not always add up to 60).

This year the best overall county was West Yorkshire with 20 points

2nd=   - 10 points - Staffordshire & Stockport

4th=    - 5 points - North Yorkshire & Derbyshire

6th    - 4 points - Humberside

7th    - 0 points - Durham

Bowling commenced at 9.30 with the FOURS in which only two of our five teams made it through to the preliminary KO round. However it was only last years Champions Geoff & Anne Whitehead, Geoff Dye and Jill Newsome who progressed any further, eventually going out in the Semi Finals (2-11) to Darren Cookson's West Yorkshire rink - the eventual winners.

In the afternoon it was the turn of the SINGLES in which four of our five contestants only managed a total of 2 wins (10 losses) in the group stage. However,  Danny Langdon won all his three group games and looked in great form. A 14-1 win over Ivan Lunn (2 times former Champion) took him to the QF where he overcame H Jarvis of Durham (10-5) to reach the Semi Finals.  Here Danny's run came to an end with a 9-6 defeat at the hands of Nick Tideswell (Staffs) a former National Pairs, Triples and Fours winner.

Sunday morning saw our five PAIRS take to the mats to see what they could achieve. This looked more promising with three of them reaching the last 16. Ben and Danny had won all their 3 group games and then reached the QF after another win only to lose narrowly to Stockport's Bill Burn (yesterdays Singles winner) and Michael Clancy 7-8. Unfortunately Jake and James were drawn to play against  David and Joseph Newsome but could not overcome them going down by 7-10. The brothers then went on to defeat   D Sands/P Roberts (Stockport) 13-6 and then G Stubbs/D Smith (Humberside) 9-4 in the Semi Final. In the Final they faced up to last years winners, Steve and John Packer (West Yorkshire). From the start, they kept the WY Pair under pressure with consistent and accurate drawing from Dave which forced their opponents to attack with running woods with only limited success. Going in to the last end they were 3 up and when another running wood destroyed the head leaving WY with only 2 shots, Joseph had the luxury of not having to bowl his final wood and claim victory by 8-7.   WELL DONE LADS - the high point of the weekend for North Yorkshire.

At this point, presentations were made to the winners of the Inter-County league. These were North Yorkshire A (2nd Division) and Stockport (1st Division). The latter were particularly jubilant having strived for many years to come top and at last, after 15 years since being accepted into the league, they have made it.

Finally, on Sunday afternoon, it was the turn of our four TRIPLES but it was only the Newsome family who made it into the last 16 where they immediately went down 7-8 after an extra end to Staffordshire.
