THE NESMBA CHAMPIONSHIPS - 2012
THE 2012 FINALS
Saturday March 24th & Sunday March 25th 2012
SUMMARY - The Championships were organised and run (for the last time) by the NESMBA Championship Secretary, Andy Miles (West Yorkshire) and his wife Barbara. Once again the 16 mats were borrowed from the ESMBA and laid out at the Teesdale Leisure Centre in Barnard Castle. (The trailer containing these mats and all ancillary equipment had been collected from Northampton during the previous week by Andy, then brought up from his home to Barnard Castle on the Friday afternoon). As usual, each discipline had 32 finalists playing in groups of 4, thus ensuring everyone had at least 3 games. Group winners and runners then played in a preliminary KO round leading to Quarter and Semi Finals before the last two eventually contested the Final.
The main Umpires for the weekend were Maxine Groce and Graham Foote (both days - all day), with duties also being performed by Charley Cooper, Simon Smith, Barrie Chadwick and Rose Haynes.
Our own team of qualifiers comprised 4 Singles, 4 Pairs, 4 Triples and 6 Fours 48 in total, all of whom had qualified via our own County Championships held earlier in the season. However a total of 15 substitutions were necessary to replace five key players who had been selected to represent England at the World Championships in Ireland and also three more players who were unable to play due to sickness/injury. This unfortunately weakened our overall team strength which was reflected in our final position in the County Shield. (See Roll of Honour for names of all our qualifiers).
Of the 54 games played in the initial round robin stages, we had 32 wins, 21 losses and 1 draw enabling 11 of our 18 teams to make it through to the knockout stages (final 16) - a slightly better result than last year. However only 2 of these 11 survived their preliminary knockout game with the highlight being Sean Conroy and Joseph Newsome reaching the Pairs Final. (Brief details of each discipline appear below).
Singles - Lesley Fennell (Stockport) beat Alan Brighton (Durham)
Pairs - Andy/Adam Lamb (Staffs) beat Sean Conroy/Jo Newsome (N Yorks)
Triples - Darren Cookson/Andy Miles/Royston Lewis (W Yorks) beat Dave Coultas/Steve Danby/David Rutt (Humberside)
Fours - Bernard Fennell/Paula Moores/Louise Smith/Paul Mason (Stockport) beat Ivan Lunn/Ellen Lunn/Graham Fish/Anne Fish (Derbyshire)
Shield - All those reaching the Quarter Finals and above are awarded points (15 per discipline) which go towards this Shield.
- Best overall county wasSTOCKPORT with 14 points
- 2nd W Yorkshire12; 3rd= Derbyshire and Humberside 8; 5th Staffordshire 7; 6th Durham 6; 7th N Yorkshire 4 and 8th Lancashire 1.
- Merseyside did not take part.
SATURDAY 24th MARCH - Neither the Chairman or Secretary were present so after a brief opening address by Championship Secretary Andy, the FOURS got underway at 9.30am. Our squad of 6 Fours clocked up 9 wins and 9 losses in the round robin allowing the Fours of Sean Conroy, Gordon Raggett and Keith Tingay to progress into the knockouts where, unfortunately they all fell at the first hurdle.
In the afternoon it was the turn of the SINGLES in which our 4 contestants managed 7 wins and 5 losses between them which was enough to put Simon Holtby and Geoff Whitehead through to the knockouts. Simon then lost 8-9 whilst Geoff survived with an 8-6 win only to lose 8-12 to Lesley Fennell (the eventual Champion) in the Quarter Final. Good effort Geoff.
SUNDAY 25th MARCH - Sunday morning saw our 4 PAIRS make their bid for glory. 5 losses and 7 wins allowed Sean Conroy/Jo Newsome to carry on along with Simon/Cameron Breeze (in their first Championship). The latter then faltered at 8-13 but Sean and Jo sailed on with 3 convincing wins (16-3, 18-2 and 11-5) to reach the Final. Here they finally met their match against Andy and Adam Lamb, last years Triples Champions from Staffordshire. Best effort of the weekend - well done both.
At this point presentations were made to the winners of the seasons Inter-County league. These were HUMBERSIDE A in Division 2 and NORTH YORKSHIRE A in Division 1 - both teams having sailed through the season without being defeated. See NESMBA for the full final tables.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon, it was the turn of our 4 TRIPLES. This began full of promise as with 9 wins, only 2 losses and a draw all 4 went into the preliminary KO round. But that was it.......all 4 were then knocked out!
Thus ended a long, weary and (for North Yorkshire, disappointing) weekend. Thanks go to all those who stayed to watch the Finals and help load up all 16 mats etc onto the ESMBA trailer which was taken home by Rose Haynes who returned it to Bedford on her way to the National Finals at the end of the week.
