THE NESMBA CHAMPIONSHIPS - 2009
SUMMARY - The Championships were organised and run by the NESMBA Championship Secretary, Andy Miles (West Yorkshire) and his wife Barbara, using 16 mats supplied by Durham (8). N Yorkshire (4) and Humberside (4).As usual, each discipline had 32 finalists playing initially in groups of 4, thus ensuring everyone had at least 3 games. Group winners and runners then played in a preliminary KO round leading to Quarter and Semi Finals before the last two eventually contest the Final.
Our own team was 45 strong comprising 4 Singles, 5 Pairs, 5 Triples and 4 Fours all of whom had qualified by reaching the final stages of our own County Championships held earlier in the season. (Alex Robinson had unfortunately pulled out due to an injured foot and he was replaced by Jacinta Townend (Triples) and Anne Whitehead (Singles)). See Roll of Honour for names of all our qualifiers.
As usual, there were mixed fortunes for our players some of whom were taking part for their first time. Overall, of the 54 games played in the initial round robin stages, we had 35 wins, 17 losses and 2 draws enabling 11 of our 18 teams to make it through their round robin games to reach the knockout stage (final 16). Out of these we then had 6 Quarter Finalists, 4 Semi Finalists, 3 Finalists and one overall Champion. This was our best ever overall performance and with one more point would have been good enough to win us the County Shield for the very first time.
(Details of each discipline appear below).
Singles - Geoff Whitehead (N. Yorkshire) beat Kevin Siddle (W. Yorkshire) 11-4
Pairs - Bill Burn/Wyn Thompson (Stockport) beat Darren Cookson/Kevin Siddle (W. Yorkshire) 13-3
Triples - Walter & Margaret Stockhill/Reg Deans (W. Yorkshire) beat Rose Haynes/Gareth Townend/Roger Green (N. Yorkshire) 8-3
Fours - Bill Burns/Adam, Scott & Louise Smith (Stockport) beat Geoff & Anne Whitehead/Geoff Dye/Roger Green (N. Yorkshire) 8-6
Shield - Best overall county was shared by Stockport & W. Yorkshire with 16 points each.
- 3rd N. Yorkshire 15; 4th Derbyshire 6; 5th Durham 3; 6th= Humberside & Lancashire 2
- Merseyside did not take part.

SATURDAY 21st MARCH - The day kicked of with the FOURS in which our squad clocked up 9 wins and 3 losses in the round robin and three of our four teams then went into the last 16. Here two more were eliminated but Geoff & Anne Whitehead/Geoff Dye/Roger Green won both their Quarter Final and Semi Final games (against former Fours Champions Darren Cookson and Ivan Lunn respectively) to reach the Final for the second successive year. Here they once again came up against Bill Burns four who they had beaten in last years Final by a single shot after an extra end. This year however, Bill's team were more determined than ever not to settle for 2nd best and eventually the Stockport four triumphed by 8-6.
In the afternoon it was the turn of the SINGLES in which our four managed 5 wins, 6 losses and a draw which was only good enough to allow Geoff Whitehead through to the knockouts. Geoff, who had been playing Fours all morning, was in great form and won his next three games 15-7, 11-8 and 9-8 to reach the Final. Here he faced up to W Yorkshire's young Kevin Siddle one of the most natural bowlers in the north. However, Geoff proved to be more than a match for Kevin and eventually took the Singles title by 11-4 with an end in hand.
SUNDAY 22nd MARCH - Sunday morning saw our 5 PAIRS make their bid for glory. A good start was made in the round robin with 4 of our pairs winning all their games and only Dennis Jarvis & Paul Williamson failing to progress after disappointingly losing two games and drawing their third. Ben Render/Richard Lochman (2-10) and the Townends (4-9) were then eliminated but Rose Haynes/Roger Green and Alan Banthorpe/Brian Foster both won their next two games to reach the Semi-Finals. This included a (10-6) QF win over Lesley/Bernard Fennell (winners in 2001 & 2004) by Rose/Roger whilst Alan/Brian convincingly beat Dave Coultas/Steve Danby, winners for the last two years by 12-3. However that proved to be the end of the day for our two pairs with Rose/Roger going out 6-11 to the eventual winners and Alan/Brian losing 5-10 to the runners up.
At this point the presentations were made for the winners of the Inter-County league. These were Humberside 'A' in Division 2 and W. Yorkshire in Division 1. See NESMBA for the full final tables.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon, it was the turn of our 5 TRIPLES. Overall round robin results in this were 9 wins and 6 losses allowing 3 of our Triples to progress to the knockouts. Although Francis & Sarah Boatman/Jacinta Townend were then eliminated 5-8, Ben Render/Jayne Rudd/Richard Lochman went on to the QF where they just lost 6-7 after an extra end. Rose Haynes/Gareth Townend/Roger Green meanwhile had three further wins to make it into the Final where unfortunately they did not quite put it all together, losing out 3-11 to Walter Stockhill's trio from W Yorkshire.
