THE NESMBA CHAMPIONSHIPS - 2008
SUMMARY - The Championships were organised and run by the NESMBA Championship Secretary, Andy Miles from West Yorkshire. He was ably assisted by his wife and various others on the desk ensuring all went smoothly and to plan. All counties supplied prizes for the raffles - one held on each day. As usual 16 mats were used and we supplied 4 of them thanks to Arthur Jackson's transport and Dennis Jarvis's help. The format was as it always is, with 32 finalists in each discipline playing initially in groups of 4, thus ensuring everyone had at least 3 games. Group winners and runners up then played in a preliminary KO round leading to Quarter and Semi Finals before the last two eventually won through to contest the Final. There were no official umpires present. This year Merseyside were unable to take part.
Our own team was 53 strong comprising 4 Singles, 5 Pairs, 5 Triples and 6 Fours all of whom had qualified by reaching the final stages of our own County Championships held earlier in the year (see Roll of Honour for names of all qualifiers). As usual, there were mixed fortunes for our players several of whom were taking part for their first time. Overall, of the 60 games played in the initial round robin stages, we had 35 wins, 19 losses and 6 draws, 12 of our 20 teams managed to make it through their round robin games to reach the knockout stage (final 16) and of these we then had 8 Quarter finalists, 3 Semi finalists, 2 finalists and one overall Champion. (Details of each discipline appear below).
Singles - Royston Lewis (W. Yorkshire) beat Bernard Fennell (Stockport) 15-6
Pairs - Dave Coultas/Steve Danby (Humberside) beat Bob Jolley/Jack Lewis (Lancashire) 17-2

Fours - Geoff & Anne Whitehead, Geoff Dye and Arthur Jackson (N. Yorkshire) beat Bill Burns four (Stockport) 6-5

SATURDAY 15th MARCH
The first discipline on Saturday morning was the FOURS and in the initial round robin stage our squad clocked up 11 wins, 4 losses and 3 draws. This resulted in four of the six teams progressing into the the Preliminary KO round in which one more of our teams was eliminated. This left Alan Banthorpe, Derek Williams, Danny Brown and Barry Simmonite, David & Joseph Newsome, Ben Render and Richard Lochman and Geoff & Anne Whitehead, Geoff Dye and Arthur Jackson in the final eight (Quarter Finals). Here, David's four went on into the Semis with a 8-2 win over Alan's four whilst Geoff's team also progressed with a narrow 6-5 win in their game. Inevitably these two were then drawn to play one another for a place in the Final and in a closely fought tussle, it was Geoff and Co. who just went through with an 8-7 win over David, who went out in the Semis for the 2nd year in a row (coincidentally by the same score). In an excellent Final against Bill Burns Stockport team, the two Geoffs, Anne and Arthur finally triumphed to take this years Fours title by a single shot after Bill had forced the match into an extra end.
In the afternoon, it was the turn of the SINGLES where we had 6 wins, 4 losses and 2 draws in the round robin round. Both David Newsome and Dennis Jarvis made it into the Preliminary KO round, where Dennis went down 5-11 but David reached the Quarter Finals with an 11-6 win. David, (last years Champion) them came up against Royston Lewis from West Yorkshire who unfortunately was in great form and after ending David's hopes (by 10-7) of retaining the title he won in 2007, he then went on to beat Bernard Fennell from Stockport in the Final to become this years Champion.
SUNDAY 16th MARCH
Sunday morning saw our 5 PAIRS make their bid for glory. In the round robin we clocked up 8 wins, 6 losses and 1 draw. Richard Clark/Dennis Jarvis, and Alan Banthorpe/Bryan Foster both lost two of their games and so went no further. In the Preliminary KO round, Derek & Pat Beardsley then lost 3-9 whilst Rose Haynes/Roger Green and Simon Holtby/Gary Burnham won 10-5 and 10-9 respectively to reach the Quarter Finals. In these, Rose and Roger then lost by a single shot (8-9) to Stockport's Bernard & Leslie Fennell (eventual runners up), whilst Simon & Gary went down 5-12 to David Coultas/Steve Danby (eventual Champions) from Humberside.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon, it was the turn of our 5 TRIPLES. Overall round robin results in this were 10 wins and 5 losses. Both Roger Green/Keith Smallwood/Jean Calvert and David, Joseph and Jill Newsome won all three of their round robin games to reach the last 16 whilst two wins was enough to take Simon Holtby/Jayne Rudd/Richard Lochman through as well. Roger's trio then faltered, losing 5-8 but a good 12-2 win for the Newsome family and a bye for Simon (the opposition had gone home unaware they had qualified) meant we again had two teams in the Quarter Finals. Drawn against the eventual winners, the wheels then came off for Simon who went out by 2-10 but the Newsomes battled away into the Semis after winning their Quarter Final after an extra end. There, they beat an experienced Durham team by 7-4 to find themselves in the Final against the Derbyshire trio of Ivan & Ellen Lunn and Graham Fish. The opposition were in great form with Ivan in particular taking advantage of the slightest opening to keep David constantly under pressure. However, David responded well with some equally great shots but in the last end he found that a 4 was needed to square the match. This proved too much to ask and although they picked up a 3, our team had to be content with a hard fought runners up place losing out by 7-8.
