THE NESMBA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005
REPORTS ON THE FINALS
Once again these took place at the Teesdale Leisure Centre in Barnard Castle - this time on two glorious spring days. Because the NESMBA still has no elected Competition Secretary, the same administrative arrangements were followed as last year with David Rutt doing all the preparatory arrangements and apart from an official welcome, taking no part in running affairs during the weekend. These fell mainly on the shoulders of Jack Lewis, Shirley Rhodes, Warren Rylands and Barry Chadwick with contributions from others as well. North Yorkshire was represented this year by four entries in each discipline (see Roll of Honour) all of whom had qualified in the County Championships held earlier in the year.
The first event on Saturday morning was as usual, the Fours in which only Colin Rapers team got through the round robin (on the strength of 2 wins) only to go down 5-12 to Dave Ives of Lancashire. In the Singles we fared a little better with both Fred Wood and Anne Ridge winning all three of their initial games. Fred then went down in the preliminary knockout losing 6-11 to Stockports Mike Clancy whilst Anne won 13-10 to progress to the Quarter Final. Here she was disappointed not to go further after losing 8-9 to Kenny Taylor of Cumbria having dropped a 3 on the last end.
On Sunday morning in the Pairs, only Richard Clark/Dennis Jarvis reached the knockout but then lost out 10-14 to Ivan & Elaine Lunn from Derbyshire. Sunday afternoon saw an improvement in our fortunes in the Triples when both Alan Banthorpe and Rose Haynes reached the Quarter Finals. In these both were defeated after a below par showing against what turned out to be the eventual finalists. Alan lost 4-10 to Michael Manns trio from Cumbria whilst Rose, up against Derbyshires Ivan Lunn, fell disappointedly by 2-9.
The eventual winners were as follows.
Singles - Terry Flint (Derbyshire) beat Royston Lewis (W Yorks) 13-4 (see PhotoGallery)
Pairs - Royston Lewis/Bill Tillotson (W Yorks) beat R Feris/Ray Crooks (Derbyshire) 12-6
Triples - Ivan & Elaine Lunn/G Fish (Derbyshire) beat M & K Mann/B Robson (Durham) 7-4
Fours - Kenny Taylor (Cumbria) beat Dave Ives (Lancashire) 6-3 (see PhotoGallery)
Shield - Best overall county was won by Derbyshire with 13 points with W Yorks in 2nd place with 9 points.
The official umpires on Saturday were Chris Watson (Humberside) and Roger Green (North Yorkshire). There were no volunteers for Sunday although Noel Clarke helped out during the afternoon having been knocked out of the Pairs.
