THE NESMBA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004

REPORTS ON THE FINALS

Our full team this year consisted of 4 Singles, 3 Pairs, 4 Triples and 5 Fours and all these qualifiers were drawn from the results of our own County Championships. The names of all 42 qualifiers appear as usual in the Rolls of Honour. The event was held once again at the Teesdale Leisure Centre in Barnard Castle over two wet and stormy days. In spite of the fact that there was no official Northern Zone Championship Secretary, David Rutt (the previous encumbent) had still done all the substantial preparatory work of organising the venue, mats, draw, scorecards and score sheets etc. True to his word, David took no part in the running of the day (apart from his formal welcome) and the recording of scores etc throughout the weekend itself, fell on the shoulders mainly of Warren Rylands (Merseyside), Shirley Rhodes (West Yorkshire), Bernard Fennell (Stockport) and Roger Green (North Yorkshire).

The Championships started on Saturday with the Fours in which we had no success at all with all 5 teams failing to reach the final 16 - Richard Clarks team being unlucky not to go through after winning two of their three round robin games. In the afternoon we fared a little better in the Singles with all but Ken Calvert (last years Champion) qualifying for the knockouts. In these, Rose Haynes went down to last years finalist Darren Cookson from West Yorkshire whilst Dennis Jarvis was beaten by Roger Green. Roger then went on to play Darren in the Quarter Finals but was disappointed to be narrowly defeated 10-8 having led most of the way.

On Sunday, our three Pairs all suffered badly with only one win out of the nine games played. However, in the afternoon the Triples gave us our best results with all four of our teams reaching the final 16. Of these, it was only Rose Haynes, Roger Green and Simon Holtby who went on to reach the Quarter Finals. They had an eventful match against Derbyshire, in which they struggled back from 7-1 down and gained a 3 on the last end to force an extra end. In this Simon Holtbys second delivery lay on the jack and refused all efforts of the opposition to budge it making a place in the Semis look assured. However, on a very fast mat. Rose, with her last wood, narrowly missed a delicate shot to ease away the opponents second wood and just caught Simons shot wood, sending the jack away to go one down.

The eventual winners were as follows.

Singles     - Ivan Lunn (Derbyshire) beat Steve Danby (Humberside) 13-6

Pairs        - Bernard Fennell (Stockport) beat Terry Flint (Derbyshire) 9-7

Triples    - Bob Fleet (Cumbria) beat Ivan Lunn (Derbyshire) 6-2

Fours      - Darren Cookson (W Yorkshire) beat Ivan Lunn (Derbyshire) 15-2

Shield    - Best overall county was won by Derbyshire with 19 points over West Yorkshire with 10 points

The official umpire for the weekend was John Gooch (Humberside) apart from the Saturday morning session when no umpire was available.
