7a - THE NESMBA CHAMPIONSHIPS - 2018
THE 2018 FINALS
SUMMARY - In each discipline the normal format of 32 finalists playing in groups of 4 was followed, thus ensuring everyone had at least 3 games. Group winners and runners up then played in a preliminary KO round leading to Quarter and Semi Finals before the last two eventually contested the Final.
Our own team of qualifiers comprised 5 Singles, Pairs and Triples and 7 Fours - 58 players in total, all of whom had qualified via our County Championships held earlier in the season. (See Roll of Honour for names of all our qualifiers). Of the 66 games played by our teams in the initial round robin stages, we had 39 wins, 24 losses and 3 draws - leading to 13 of our 22 teams making it through to the knockout stages (final 16). (Brief details of each discipline appear below).
Singles - Steve Packer (WY) beat Clint Crowther (Stockport) 9-5
Pairs - P Roberts/D Sands (Stockport) beat Royston Lewis/Dave Fletcher (WY) 11-6
Triples - James Clark/Steve Duffin/David Newsome (NY) beat S Thorneycrofy/A Lamb/John Skelding (Staffs) 7-6
Fours - B Holbrook/W Thompson/M Clancy/B Burn (Stockport) beat P Roberts/D Lloyd/D Sands/C Crowther (Stockport) 7-6
Shield - All those reaching the quarter-finals and above are awarded points (15 per discipline) which go towards the County Shield (but only the first 4 teams entered from each county in each discipline count so total points do not always add up to 60).
This year the best overall county was Stockport with 20 points
2nd - WY - 14
3rd - NY - 11
4th - Staffs - 5
5th - Derbyshire - 3
6th - Durham - 2
7th - Humberside - 1

Note that as usual a RAFFLE was held on each day for prizes supplied by the participating counties. These were both run by Stockport and the total amount raised (for NESMBA funds) was just over £500 - thanks everyone.
Note that all our entrants names appear in the ROLL OF NESMBA QUALIFIERS
The weekend will be remembered particularly for the atrocious weather with snow, ice and strong winds trying their hardest to prevent bowlers from taking part! However, they failed and all competitions went ahead with a full complement of entrants.
SATURDAY 17th MARCH
FOURS - 5 of our 7 teams made the last 16 so it was inevitable that there would be some NY clashes. Alan Banthorpe's four lost to the Ridge' s four by 6-7 after an extra end. The Ridges then drew Rose Hayne's four in the QF and lost 6-7 and Rose then lost her SF 4-5 to the eventual Champions from Stockport. Last years runners up Dave Herbert and Co. once again had a good run beating Derbyshire 10-4 and West Yorkshire 7-4 before losing their SF 3-6. This was a good start to the weekend and clocked up 4 points towards the Shield.
SINGLES - 3 made it into the knockouts where Dennis Jarvis drew Steve Duffin who beat him 11-3. Steve then put up a brave fight against Kevin Siddle eventually losing 9-11. David Brown also went out in the first round by 7-13 to Darren Cookson. 1 more Shield point.
SUNDAY 18th MARCH
PAIRS - Once again 3 of our 5 teams reached the final stages where Harry and Gill were drawn against Keith and David - the latter winning 9-8. They then lost 8-12 to Royston Lewis/Dave Fletcher (WY), the eventual runners up. The Newsome boys however reached the SF after two convincing wins, 10-4 and 10-5 but then also lost to Royston and Dave 3-12. Another 2 Shield points.
At lunchtime, the new League Secretary Bill Burn made the presentations to the winning teams in both Divisions. these were Stockport (Div 1) and North Yorkshire A (Div 2).
TRIPLES - Only 2 of our 5 reached the knockouts with Jill, Joseph and Daniel losing 9-10 to Stockport in their first game. However our best performance of the weekend came from our other Triple, James Clark, Steve Duffin and David Newsome who were completely undefeated. Winning all 3 round robin games they then polished off Stockport 13-0, Derbyshire 10-2 and 11-1 to reach the Final. Here they had a tough match against Staffs but just clinched this years Triples title by 7-6. WELL DONE CHAPS!
